  • Description

Apollo 14's Lunar Module Pilot, Ed Mitchell, will, of course, go down to the moon with Mission Commander, Al Shepard, while Command Module Pilot Stu Roosa orbits above performing photography and other experiments in lunar orbit.

In these scenes astronaut Mitchell is training for some of his tasks on the lunar surface, such as deploying equipment from the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly - called MESA. MESA is a pallet located in Quad 4 of the Descent Stage of the Lunar Module.

On the moon, as in the training exercise, Mitchell will first make ready an equipment transfer bag.

Here, he transfers Portable Life Support System batteries to the bag...

The MESA also holds equipment such as a TV camera and lenses, a scoop, tongs and other tools and sample return containers such as the one of this exercise.

Tools like this harmer are also carried in the transfer bag until needed.

Here Mitchell unloads an erectable S-Band antenna which has been stored alongside the MESA, which stores the antenna cable.

When actually deploying equipment on the moon, the astronauts will also transfer MESA items directly to a small two-wheeled cart for lunar surface transport.
