Background: President Anwar Sadat arrived back in Cairo on Saturday night (April 29) after cutting short his visit to Moscow -- where he discussed the Middle East crisis with Soviet leaders -- by a day. The Egyptian government said President Sadat was due to make an important May Day speech at Alexandria on Sunday.
A communique published at the end of the two-day visit said the Soviet Union agreed with Egypt that Arab countries are entitled to use "other measures" than political ones to resolve the crisis. Reports said this was an apparent hardening of the Soviet stand. The communique also mentioned a new agreement about "important measures" to strengthen military cooperation between Egypt and the Soviet Union.
The new chief of the Egyptian Air Force, Major-General Hosin Mubarak, remained in Moscow for more talks -- widely expected to cover further arms cooperation, either in the form of aircraft or rocket supplies or technical training aid.
