  • Description

THE MASSIVE HELICOPTER AIRLIFT BY AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS LAST WEEKEND WAS THE LARGEST SO FAR A SERIES OF DRIVERS TO FLUSH VIETCONG GUERRILLAS OUT OF THE JUNGLES AND RICE FIELDS TO THE SOUTH AND EAST OF SAIGON.

THIS FILM WAS SHOT ON ONE OF THESE MISSIONS, MOUNTED FROM VINH LONG HELICOPTER BASE IN THE MEKONG DELTA SOME 80 KILOMETRES (50 MILES) SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON. IT IS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE U.S. 114TH AVIATION COMPANY, WHICH CAME TO SOUTH VIETNAM IN 1963, AND IS USED TO AIRLIFT SOUTH VIETNAMESE GROUND FORCES INTO ACTION AGAINST THE VIETCONG AND TO GIVE THEM AIR SUPPORT.

IT SHOWS THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH THE AMERICANS AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE HAVE FOUNDED EXTREME DIFFICULTY IN MAKING CONTACT WITH THE VIETCONG, WHO DISAPPEAR INTO THE JUNGLE AND REFORM TO HIT BACK AT THE GOVERNMENT FORCES. ANOTHER MAJOR PROBLEM IS SECURITY AT BASE. REPORTS SAY THAT LAST WEEKEND'S OPERATIONS IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE, WHICH TOOK A WEEK TO PLAN, WERE KNOWN TO THE VIETCONG GUERRILLAS BEFOREHAND DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL.

FILM HAS NATURAL SOUND THROUGHOUT. IT IS THE FIRST OF THE TWO SPECIAL REPORTS ON THE SITUATION IN SOUTH VIETNAM TODAY.
