    A TWO-WEEK EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS, WOOD-CARVING, TEXTILE AND POTTERY BY A GROUP OF ARTISTS WHICH CALLS ITSELF THE "AKWAPIM SIX" HAS GONE ON SHOW AT THE ARTS CENTRE IN THE GHANAIAN CAPITAL OF ACCRA. THE OPENING WAS PERFORMED LAST FRIDAY (6 DECEMBER) BY MR. K. DANSO-MANU, EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THE ARTS COUNCIL.

    THE "AKWAPIM SIX" WAS FOUNDED IN 1954 BY A GROUP OF SIX ARTISTS LED BY DR. OKU AMPOFO, A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER WITH A DEEP INTEREST IN ART.

    THE MEMBERSHIP HAS NOW GROWN TO 12, AND THE GROUP'S AIM IS TO DO ALL POSSIBLE TO PRESERVE THE CULTURE OF GHANA.

    IN HIS OPENING SPEECH, MR. DANSO-MANU SAID AFRICA HAD BEEN ABLE TO PRESERVE HER CULTURE AND TO RETAIN HER VITALITY AND CREATIVE POWERS TO A CONSIDERABLE DEGREE, DESPITE GREAT POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS.

    HE SUGGESTED GHANAIAN MUSIC, DANCING, FOLKLORE, DRAMA, LITERATURE AND CEREMONIES HELD A GREAT DEAL OF EXCITING ARTISTIC MATERIAL FOR THE WEST OR THE WORLD TO ENJOY.

    HE SAID THE ARTS COUNCIL OF GHANA WAS LEADING THE WAY IN STARTING A COLLECTION OF WORKS OF ART THAT IT WAS HOPED WOULD THE BASIS OF A NATIONAL ART GALLERY.
