  • Description

Greek premier Constantine Karamanlis used his opening speech at the 40th International Trade Fair in Salonika on Saturday (30 August) to announce his Government's new five year development plan.

He said the aim of the five year plan was a fairer redistribution of the national income throughout the country's various regions and among the working class. Mr. Karamanlis also stressed that his Government was trying to reoriented Greek exports to cut the country's chronic trade gap. This implied the attraction of foreign capital, technological and organisational methods and must have been partly aimed at the many foreign representatives at the Fair.

The United States, France, Bulgaria, yugoslavia, Hungary, Rumania, Poland, Albania, South Africa, Sweden and Austria have stands at this year's fair as well as a joint stand from the Common Market countries.

Mr. Karamanlis, who is leading Greece's first democratic government after years of military dictatorship received an enthusiastic reception at the Fair. He described in detail to the crowd how the Government had checked inflation, raised real incomes of farmers and wage-earners and helped revive the economy.

SYNOPSIS: The opening of this year's International Trade Fair in Salonika, northern Greece, was used by Premier Constantine Karamanlis as an opportunity to announce his Government's new five year development plan. He said the aim of the plan was a fairer redistribution of the national income throughout the country and among the working class.

Mr. Karamanlis also stressed that his Government was trying to reoriented Greek exports to cut the country's chronic trade gap. This implied the attraction of foreign capital, technology and organisational methods.

Much of the speech was clearly aimed at the many foreign representatives at the Fair. Mr, Karamanlis, who is leading the first Greek democratic government after years of military dictatorship, told his listeners that today all Greeks and foreigners knew that the economy was under full control..under the control of the legitimate government and above all under the control of reason.

It was the fortieth International Fair at Salonika and as the enthusiastic reception for Mr. Karamanlis stressed, the first under democracy for a long time.
