  • Description

The United States retained the America's Cup with astonishing ease yesterday (17 September), when the defending yacht Courageous beat Australia's challenger Southern Cross for the fourth successive race in the best-of-seven series.

Courageous took the lead from the start and was first across the line by 20 seconds. Again Courageous proved far superior in speed and tactics, with veteran yachtsman Ted Hood at the helm.

By the end of the first leg, Courageous had built up a lead of 1 min 40 seconds and continued to pull steadily ahead. At the finish, the defender led by half a mile -- by a time of seven minutes 19 seconds, the most decisive victory of the series.

The American's Cup has still never been wreathed from the United States. The ancient silver mug was first won by the schooner America when it defeated 14 British yachts in a race round the British Isle of Wight in 1851.
