  • Description

Sir Wilfred Kemp Hughes, Chairman of the Australian Government's Foreign Affairs Committee, arrived in Taipei, Formosa, from Tokyo on June 8th for a five day stay.

Lady Hughes and Sir Wilfred's two secretaries-------- Miss Margaret Anderson and Mrs. G. Noall--- accompanied him. They had previously spent several days in Tokyo watching the Asian Olympic Games. While in Formosa, Sir Wilfred conducted a series of lectures, as well as conferring with President Chiang Kai-shek and other Government heads and ministers of the Nationalist Chinese.

Sir Wilfred left Taipei on the 13th, and returned to Australia via Hong Kong.

Born in Melbourne in 1895, Sir Wilfred graduated from Oxford University, served in the first and second world wars--taken prisoner by the Japanese in the latter--represented Australia in the 1920 World Olympics and was elected as Chairman of the 16th Olympic in 1956. His parliamentary career started in the thirties. His first government appointment came in 1934, when for two years he served as the Labour and Transport Minister. In 1947 he was made Minister of Transport and, later, Minister for Education.
