    A NEW DAM THAT WILL BRING WATER SUPPLIES TO A WIDE AREA IN SOUTHERN MOROCCO, HAS BEEN INAUGURATED BY KING HASSAN ON THE RIVER DRAA, AT NORBAZ, NEAR OUARZAZATE. THE DAM, WHICH WILL COST ABOUT GBP7,360,000 STERLING (17 1/2-MILLION DOLLARS), IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN THREE YEARS.

    THE DAM, NAMED "MANSOUR EDDEHBI" AFTER A FIFTEENTH CENTURY SULTAN, IS BEING BUILT BY THE SOVIET CONSTRUCTION COMPANY TECHNOPROMEXPORT.

    CONSTRUCTION OF THE DAM WILL REQUIRE A WORK FORCE OF 650. WHEN FINISHED, IT WILL ENABLE AN AREA OF AT LEAST 62,000 ACRES (25,000 HECTARES) TO IRRIGATED.

    A HYDRO-POWER STATION, WITH A CAPACITY OF 10,000 KILOWATTS, IS ALSO PLANNED FOR THE DAM SITE. POWER SUPPLIES WILL BE FED INTO THE GENERAL POWER GRID OF THE COUNTRY.

    KING HASSAN, ACCOMPANIED BY AN OFFICIAL PARTY TRAVELLED TO THE REMOTE SITE FOR THE INAUGURATION.

    AFTER SEEING MODELS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT, THE KING PRESSED A BUTTON WHICH DETONATED THE FIRST EXPLOSION DURING THE GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY.
