Background: Members of the ADF clashed with rightist Lebanese militiamen Friday morning in the Chiah-Ain Remmanah sector of Beirut. Small arms fire could be heard during the morning, but troops kept civilians away from the area which was one of the main front line areas during the recent civil war.
Hamra Street, the shopping centre of west Beirut, was less crowded than usual with several shops closed and there were queues outside bakeries. Newspapers gave prominence to the recent clashes, several of the papers exercising self censorship as it has been impossible lately for editors in west Beirut to submit copy for scrutiny at the censors office in east Beirut.
