INTRODUCTION: Members of the Superior Council of Shiite Muslims met in Lebanon on Thursday (24 February) to discuss the critical situation in the south of the country.

SYNOPSIS: Deputy members of Parliament and community leaders from the south attended the meeting. A commission set up to investigate the situation, will be meeting with President Elias Sarkis in the new future. Recent sporadic fighting between rightist and units of the country's leftist-Palestinian alliance have caused grave concern in the country. Syrian troops of the 30,000 strong Arab League Peace-keeping force withdrew from the region just over a week ago. The Syrian soldiers left after protests by Israel against the presence of the Syrians so close to its border with Lebanon. But the fighting continues. In one of the southern districts, Rachaya alfoukhar, 600 of the villagers left their homes because of recent shelling. Only the sick, elderly and a few Palestinian commandos remain to defend the region against attack.
