Background: Indian Police last night shot dead two people during rioting in the village of Kairna in Maharashtra State where the Least 126 people have been killed since Friday in Hindu-Moslem fighting. But in the town of Bhiwandi, where the clashes began, the 24-hour curfew was lifted today to enable the people to by food and other essentials.
More than 60 people were killed in the rights in Bhiwandi, a weavers' town about 30 miles (50 Kms) north of Bombay. about a fifth of the 160,000 population lost their homes... destroyed by arsonists.
Many of the inhabitants have fled....other are being provided with food and shelter at a Government refugee camp. Three hundred members of the Indian Home Guard are at work in the town, clearing up the debris. In a precautionary health measure, the entire area is being sprayed with DDT.
The trouble in Bhiwandi started during celebrations marking the birth of Shivaji, the legendary Mahratta warrior who fought India's Moslem rulers 300 years ago. Moslems protested when some of the 70,000 marchers began shouting anti-Moslem slogans.
