    A GIANT RALLY IN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) MARKED THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA. ATTENDING WERE THE PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN AND THE KING, TUANKU SYED PUTRA.

    THE CEREMONY WAS ONE OF THE LAST PUBLIC APPEARANCES THE KING WILL MAKE. MALAYSIA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WITH AN ELECTED MONARCH, AND THE PRESENT KING IS DUE TO STEP DOWN ON SEPTEMBER 20, WHEN THE NEW KING, SULTAN ISMAIL NASIRUDDIN, TAKES OFFICE. DURING HIS SPEECH AT THE ANNIVERSARY RALLY THE KING THANKED THE PEOPLE OF MALAYSIA FOR THEIR LOYALTY DURING HIS REIGN. HE REFERRED ALSO TO THE RECENT SECESSION OF SINGAPORE FROM THE FEDERATION. HE POINTED OUT THAT ALTHOUGH MUCH OF THE WORLD HAD BEEN DISAPPOINTED AND ANXIOUS AT THE NEWS OF THE MOVE, MALAYSIA HAD ACCEPTED IT CALMLY.

    THE STADIUM WAS CROWDED FOR A MARCH PASS OF REPRESENTATIVES OF VARIOUS YOUTH ORGANISATIONS - AND A DISPLAY OF GYMNASTICS AND SINGING BY YOUNG PEOPLE. ThE HIGHLIGHT WAS A MASS FORMATION BY THREE THOUSAND SCHOOLCHILDREN OF A MAP OF MALAYSIA STRETCHED ACROSS THE STADIUM. IN THE CENTRE MORE SCHOOLCHILDREN SPELLED OUT THE WORDS - "KEKAL MALAYSIA" (FOREVER MALAYSIA).
