  • Description

Following the Arab Summit Conference in Baghdad earlier this month, Jordan and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) have decided to start a new round of talks. According to observers in Amman, these will be aimed at strengthening Arab relations, but are also expected to pave the way for a visit to Jordan by PLO leader, Yasser Arafat.

SYNOPSIS: In the town of Ramtha, close to the Jordan-Syrian border, a PLO delegation visiting Jordan was greeted by Jordanian Interior Minister, Suleiman Arrar, on Saturday (25 November). The delegation was headed by Khaled el Fahoum, Speaker of the Palestinian National Council and included the head of the PLO Military Department, Khaled Hassan and Fatah leader,Mahmoud Abbas. Also on Saturday, the Saudi Arabian newspaper,Al-Riyadh,reported that the PLO has suggested convening an Islamic Summit Conference to discuss the future of Jerusalem.

Later, in Amman, the PLO delegation met Jordanian Prime Minister, Mudar Badran, and other high-ranking members of his government. During the Baghdad summit Yasser Arafat and King Hussein of Jordan met four times. This rapprochement came after many years of strained relations between Jordan and the PLO, and King Hussein's military action against Palestinian guerrilla bases in Jordan in July,1971.

Al-Riyadh also said that Mr Arafat was expected to tour Arab and African countries for talks on Jerusalem -- which was divided between Israel and Jordan prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. The PLO is said to be concerned about what it calls "Zionist dangers threatening Jerusalem and means to safeguard the Arab character of the city."
