  • Description

General Humberto Delgado, leader of the anti-Fascist opposition to Portugal's old regime, was buried in Lisbon on Friday (24 January) with full military honours -- ten years after he was murdered in Spain.

President Francisco da Costa Gomes and Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves attended a church funeral ceremony and then walked behind the coffin to a cemetery overlooking the Tagus river.

Thousands of people gathered to pay tribute to the "General without fear", who has been acclaimed as the spiritual father of the military coup last April, which ended 48 years of totalitarian rule in Portugal.

General Delgado's body was flown back to Portugal from the Spanish border village of Nueva del Fresno, near where it was found covered with acid and lime in 1965.

Ten agents of the disbanded secret police of Portugal's old regime have been charged with murdering him and his Brazilian secretary, Victoria Araya de Campos, after luring them to a false rendezvous with anti-Fascist fighters.
