  • Description

Argentina President Hector Campora summoned his cabinet and his commanders of the three armed forces on Thursday (21 June) to discuss the furious gun-battle which marred the home-coming of former president Juan Person on Wednesday (20 June).

At least 20 people were killed and 300 more were wounded when rival groups - each claiming allegiance to Peron - fought a running battle at a mass rally to welcome the former President after nearly 18-years in exile.

The jetliner bringing General Peron and Dr. Campora from madrid was diverted to a military airbase, and neither men went to the rally near the original destination - the Ezeiza International airport.

Hundreds of thousands of ardent Peronist had gathered at the rally site when the shooting broke out. The clash was between extreme left-wingers backed by former Peronist urban guerrillas who demanded a 'Socialist Fatherland' from the new Government, and orthodox Peronist who wanted a 'Peronist Fatherland.'
Late on Thursday night, the former president went on television from the Presidential residence, and called for unity in rebuilding the country, warning of 'infiltrators' in his justicialist movement.

Speaking in Spanish, he said that he would soon start a nationwide tour to visit all the citizens of the provinces in their own homes. He also apologised to the people who'd come from all over the country to meet him, and who had been disappointed.

SYNOPSIS: The death toll from Wednesday's furious gunbattle in Buenos Aires is at least twenty. Some unofficial reports put it as high as 34. It began after hundreds of thousands of a???nt Peronists had gathered at a rally ground two miles from the Ezieza airport to welcome the former Argentinean President Juan Peron home after nearly eighteen years in exile.

As the time drew near for the arrival of General Peron's jet, thousands more people arrived. Police were at the rally area, and at the airport, as a matter of normal security.

It was just before the jet was due to land that the shooting broke out. The news was flashed to the aircraft, and it was diverted to a military airbase.

The clash was between extreme left-wing backed by former Peronist urban guerrillas demanding a 'Socialist Fatherland', and orthodox Peronists demanding what they called a 'Peronist Fatherland.' It left hundreds of people lying injured over the rally area. At least twenty are known to have been killed, and at least three hundred were wounded....
Meanwhile, the former President was taken with Doctor Campora and their wives by helicopter to the presidential estate in a fashionable northern suburb of Buenos Aires. It was there that General Peron went on television.

The former president begged a thousand pardons from his supporters, and told those who'd come from the provinces that held soon tour the interior. But the 77-year-old former strong-man was also stern. He condemned the gunfights which turned his homecoming into a bloodbath. He warned that Argentina must combat mercilessly those people who disturbed the principle of co-existence. Flanked by President Camera, who didn't utter a world during the 16-minute broadcast, General Peron seemed to be fulfilling the election slogan which swept his justicialist movement to power... 'Campora to government...Peron to Power' General Peron said that the country was in an economic mess. He said his people had a revolution before them, and they must work together for national reconstruction.
