  • Description

Ships and aircraft searched the English channel today (Sunday) after a Norwegian tanker reported seeing a ship sinking and hearing men shouting during the night. The missing ship has been identified as a Greek freighter Niki, 2371 tons, and no survivors were found from its crew of 21.

The freighter sank in the shallow water near the Varne sandbank, near the sunken wreckage of the Panamanian tanker Texaco Caribbean and the West German freighter Brandenburg, Which sank in January with the loss of 29 lives. The Brandenburg is believed to have struck the wreckage of the tanker, and there was speculation that despite marker buoys and a lightship the Niki has done the same.

The new tragedy draws attention yet again to the hazards of navigation in the narrow waters of the English Channel, the subject of Visnews Production 1342/71, which includes shots of the Texaco Caribbean as it was sinking.
