Background: A team of expatriate Frenchmen Sunday (13 April) won the first British Petanque Championship.

Petanque is the competitive name given to the French game of Boules, one of France's biggest pastimes.

Sir Francis Drake is reputed to have been playing the game just before the English fleet set sail to defeat the Spanish armada.

The British championships were contested by 33 teams from 23 clubs, mostly from the southern counties, and were held at Shedfield in Hampshire.

The winning team consisted of three expatriate Frenchmen from the Norfolk Square Club in London.

Nine players from Sunday's event will be selected to represent Britain in the world Petanque Championships in Quebec, Canada, in September. Seventeen other nations will take part.
