IN BRITAIN, THE IRISH GUARDS MARCH TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO MOUNT GUARD...A DUTY THAT FALLS?

  • Description

IN BRITAIN, THE IRISH GUARDS MARCH TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO MOUNT GUARD...A DUTY THAT FALLS ALMOST ALWAYS TO THE GUARDS. BUT ON THURSDAY, A NEW ZEALAND CONTINGENT OF TROOPS WILL BE TAKING OVER GUARD AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE, ST. JAMES' PALACE AND THE TOWER OF LONDON.

AT WOOLWICH TODAY THEY WERE REHEARSING THEIR NEW DUTIES.

THE NEW ZEALANDERS ARE THE FIRST COMMONWEALTH TROOPS TO DO CONTINUOUS GUARD DUTIES AT THE ROYAL PALACES.

MANY OF THE 150 MEN IN THE CONTINGENT HAD NOT HELD A RIFLE ON THE PARADE GROUND SINCE THEIR INITIAL TRAINING -- UNTIL A WELSH GUARDS DRILL SERGEANT STARTED COACHING THEM FOR THEIR II-DAY SPELL OF DUTY HERE.
