  • Description

Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands arrived in Senegal on Tuesday (29 November) for a four-day official visit. They were given an official welcome by the Senegalese President, Leopold Senghor, and entertained by a colourful display of Senegalese dancers.

SYNOPSIS: As they arrived at Dakar airport, the royal couple --who were accompanied by a large retinue of government officials, including the Dutch Foreign Minister, Mr. Max van der Stoel -- received an official state welcome from the Senegalese President, Leopold Senghor. The two countries have met before at this level. In 1974, President Senghor paid an official visit to the Netherlands.

Holland and Senegal have a history of close cultural and financial ties. The Netherlands recently gave 7,500 tonnes of cereals and 300,000,000 CFA francs (1,250,000 U.S. dollars) to help Senegal's drought-stricken region in the Sahel Desert.

As the Queen and her husband were driven through the capital, the streets were lined with more than 100,000 cheering residents. The Dutch have a thriving trade association with the Senegalese. In return for concentrated milk and European vegetables, they receive groundnuts, oil and valuable supplies of phosphates. They also provide technical advisers for Senegal's meteorological and hydrological projects in the Sahel region.

On the first day of her visit the Queen, accompanied by Senegal's Prime Minister, Abdou Diouf, attended a wreath laying ceremony at the state's national monument for the dead. Later she thanked the Senegalese for their touching welcome and expressed hope that the two countries could expand their social and economic ties.
