  • Description

The annual ministerial meeting of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (DECD) ends in Paris on Friday (26 May).

The three-day meeting brings together foreign and finance ministers form most of the world's leading industrial nations. Those represented are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and West Germany.

The opening of the conference on Wednesday coincided with the 25th anniversary of the launching of the Marshall Plan--which helped Europe regain its feet after the Second World War.

To mark the occasion, delegates heard a message from President Nixon urging them to erect a new international monetary system and to make further progress towards "a free and fair system of trade".

The main discussion at this meeting was expected to centre on the possible creation of representative body to co-ordinate the work of the various international trade and money forums.
