    A TWO-STAGE ROCKET WAS LAUNCHED SUCCESSFULLY FROM INDIA'S FIRST ROCKET BASE AT THUMBA, NEAR THE EQUATOR , ON THURSDAY, TO MARK THE COUNTRY'S ENTRY INTO THE SPACE RESEARCH FIELD.

    THE ASSEMBLING LAUNCHING OF THE ROCKET WAS COMPLETED
    BY INDIAN SCIENTIST TRAINED NASA (NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION OF THE UNITED STATES.) THE 25-FEET-LONG NIKE APACHE ROCKET WAS SUPPLIED BY NASA.IT CLAIMED 127 MILES INTO THE SKY BEFORE THE LAUNCHING, METEOROLOGICAL BALLOONS AND OTHER TEST WERE CARRIED OUT TO MAKE CERTAIN CONDITIONS WERE PERFECT.THE BASE, BECAUSE OF ITS EQUATORIAL SITUATION, IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL INFORMATION NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN FROM BASES IN OTHER LATITUDES.IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT EVENTUALLY INDIA HOPES TO BE ABLE TO OFFER THE FACILITIES AT THE BASE TO OTHER INTERESTED NATIONS, AND EVENTUALLY TO DEVELOP THUMBA INTO A WORLD CENTRE OF SPACE RESEARCH.
