    FINLAND GOES TO THE POLLS THIS MONTH AFTER AN UNEASY COALITION GOVERNMENT HELD TOGETHER FOR OVER A YEAR BY THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. JOHANNES VIROLAINEN.

    THE PRIME MINISTER REPRESENTS THE LEADING CENTRE PARTY, FORMERLY CALLED THE AGRARIANS, WITH 53 SEATS. THE OTHER PARTIES IN THE COALITION ARE THE CONSERVATIVES WITH 33, THE SWEDISH PEOPLE'S PARTY WITH 14 AND THE FINNISH PEOPLE'S PARTY WITH 13.

    THE COMMUNIST PARTY, THE RUNNERS UP AT THE LAST ELECTION, HOLDS 47 SEATS. THE OTHER PARTIES IN OPPOSITION ARE THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS WITH 38 SEATS AND THE SOCIALIST REBELS WITH 2.

    THE CENTRE PARTY IS NOT ALONE IN NAME-CHANGING. THE FINNISH PEOPLE'S PARTY WILL STAND AS THE LIBERAL PARTY. THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS DID WELL IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION IN NOVEMBER AND ARE EXPECTED TO EMERGE THIS TIME AS THE BIGGEST PARTY.

    DOMESTIC ISSUES ARE HIGH IN PARTY MANIFESTOS - HOUSING, EDUCATION, ECONOMIC EXPANSION AND PAYMENT DEFICITS. A NEW FACE AMONG THE POLITICAL NAMES: TIMO MAKINEN, THE ACE RALLY DRIVER, ONE OF THE FINNISH SPORTSMEN TRYING TO STEP INTO POLITICAL LIFE.
