  • Description

TWO NEGROES BECAME THE FIRST OF THEIR RACE TO JOIN THE SPECIAL WHITE HOUSE POLICE FORCE WHEN THEY COMMENCED THEIR DUTIES AT THE PRESIDENTIAL RESIDENCE JAN 17.

THE TWO MEN, DANIEL M. CASSEL AND JOSEPH H. PAYNE, WERE PREVIOUSLY MEMBERS OF THE WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT. AFTER THEIR SELECTION, THEY WERE SWORN IN BY THE SECRET SERVICE CHIEF AT THE WHITE HOUSE, AND COMPLETED THE NORMAL PERIOD OF THIRTY-DAYS SPECIAL TRAINING BEFORE TAKING UP THE REGULAR ROUTINE WITH THE REST OF THE SPECIAL FORCE.

OFFICER CASSEL BEGAN HIS FIRST DAY AT THE VISITORS ENTRANCE, WHILE OFFICER PAYNE CHECKED VEHICLES ENTERING AND LEAVING THROUGH ONE OF THE OUTER GATES. TO BE SELECTED FOR THE WHITE HOUSE FORCE IS INDEED AN HONOUR, AND FOR THESE MEN A UNIQUE ONE.
