Background: GDANSK, POLAND

Polish state television has reported the discovery of a clandestine radio station in the Baltic port of Gdansk. The equipment, which included cassette recorders, microphones and electronic circuitry, was said to have been used for broadcast by the outlawed Solidarity trade union. Two people--a man and woman--were arrested. They were named as Taduesz Plawinski, who was reported to have been in hiding since the military takeover last year, and Alina Bardzinska, a local hotel worker. The television report said that Western-made transmitters had also been found-- many of them with tapes tom play. They added that the tapes contained false information, which was designed to cause unrest. The authorities have discovered illegal radio stations in other cities, including Warsaw, in recent months.
