    THE EIGHT-WEEK BOYCOTT OF PORTUGUESE NATIONALS BY CHINESE IN THE PORTUGUESE ENCLAVE OF MACAO HAS ENDED PEACEFULLY.

    DURING THE BOYCOTT CHINESE GROUPS REFUSED TO PAY TAXES AND CLOSED THEIR SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS. THEY ALSO REFUSED PORTUGUESE LIVING ON THE ISLAND THE SERVICES OF PEDICABS, BUSES AND TAXIS.

    THE BOYCOTT STARTED OVER THE MACAO GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE TO SETTLE ITS DIFFERENCES WITH CHINA OVER RESPONSIBILITY FOR CLASHES LAST MONTH IN WHICH EIGHT CHINESE DIED AND 160 WERE INJURED.

    IT ENDED AT THE WEEKEND WHEN THE MACAO GOVERNMENT AGREED TO ACCEPT ALL DEMANDS PUT FORWARDS BY LOCAL CHINESE AND BY THE NEIGHBOURING PROVINCE OF KWANGTUNG IN THE PEOPLES' REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED FOR THE PORTUGUESE BY BRIGADIER-GENERAL NOBRE DE CAVALHO, THE GOVERNOR OF MACAO. THE SIGNING TOOK PLACE IN THE CONFERENCE HALL OF THE MACAO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

    LOCAL CHINESE LEADERS - SUPPORTERS OF THE PEOPLES' REPUBLIC OF CHINA PRESENTED THE DEMANDS. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IS THEIR LOCAL HEADQUARTERS. THE CHINESE COMMUNITY ON MACAO MAKES UP 95 PER CENT OF THE ISLAND'S POPULATION.

    LAST MONTH'S CLASHES AROSE OVER ALLEGATIONS OF POLICE BRUTALITY. THE PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES AGREED TO PUNISH CERTAIN OFFICIALS AND PAY COMPENSATION FOR DEATHS AND INJURIES. DEMANDS WERE THEN MADE FOR A COMPLETE BAN ON ALL TAIWAN CHINESE ACTIVITIES IN MACAO.
