  • Description

American Vice-President Spiro Agnew made an unscheduled visit to Cambodia on Friday (28 August).

Soon after his jet landed at Phnom Penh while en route from Saigon to Bangkok, the Vice-President was whisked by helicopter to meet the Cambodian leader, General Lon Nol, at the General's residence. A full guard of honour was turned out for the occasion.

The two men had talks over lunch. Vice-President Agnew said afterwards that the U.S. would continue military assistance to Cambodia, but would not become what he described as `militarily involved' there again.

On Sunday (30 August) Vice-President Agnew wound up his one-week tour of South Korea, Taiwan, South Vietnam and Thailand where he sought to reassure the leaders of South-East Asian countries of America's commitment to their defence.
