  • Description

THE CAMPAIGN FOR PAKISTAN'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION HAS BEEN STEPPED UP THIS WEEK FOLLOWING LAST WEEK'S GENERAL ELECTION. BOTH PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN, AND HIS OPPONENT, MISS FATIMA JINNAH, HAVE BEEN MAKING WHISTLE STOP TOURS OF THE ELECTORATE IN A BID FOR SUPPORT FROM THE COUNTRY'S 80,000 STRONG ELECTORAL COLLEGE.

THE CLOSE OF POLLING IN THE THREE WEEK LONG GENERAL ELECTION ENDED WITH BOTH THE RULING MUSLIM LEAGUE AND THE COMBINED OPPOSITION CLAIMING SWEEPING VICTORIES IN BOTH THE ELECTORAL COLLEGES OF EAST AND WEST PAKISTAN.

MUSLIM LEAGUE OFFICIALS CLAIMED AN 80 PER CENT VICTORY IN WEST PAKISTAN, WHILE THE OPPOSITION PARTIES SAID THEY HAD WON 75 PER CENT OF THE OVERALL VOTE IN THE COUNTRY. THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE WHICH IS MADE UP OF 80 THOUSAND "BASIC DEMOCRACIES" IS THE BODY WHICH VOTES IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

WITH VOTING FOR THE PRESIDENCY NOT DUE UNTIL MARCH NEXT, BOTH CANDIDATES ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE TO FIGHT HARD FOR A LARGE BLOCK OF UNCOMMITTED ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTES WHICH ARE SAID TO SUPPORT NEITHER SIDE, ALTHOUGH BOTH PARTIES ARE CLAIMING THEM AS SUPPORTERS.

THE CAMPAIGN TO DATE HAS BEEN BOISTEROUS, WITH BOTH CANDIDATES THROWING THE ACRIMONIOUS CHARGES AND COUNTER CHARGES AT EACH OTHER. INCLUDING THAT RIGGING THE GENERAL ELECTION.
