  • Description

BOMB AND ROCKET ATTACKS CAUSED MINOR DAMAGED AT THE AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTRE AND THE BANK OF AMERICA IN BEIRUT ON SUNDAY (29 MARCH) FOLLOWING TWO EARLIER EXPLOSIONS AT THE U.S. EMBASSY AND THE AMERICAN LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OFFICE.

THE RADICAL POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL FOUR ATTACKS. THE POPULAR FRONT SAID THAT THE ATTACKS WERE IN REPRISAL FOR ALLEGED U.S EMBASSY PLANS TO PARALYSE THE PALESTINE COMMANDO MOVEMENT BY FOMENTING RELIGIOUS STRIFE AND MASSACRES IN LEBANON.

A SINGLE ROCKET WAS FIRED AT THE BACK OF THE BANK OF AMERICA BUILDING IN THE CENTRE OF BEIRUT'S FINANCIAL DISTRICT. IT SHATTERED WINDOWS BUT CAUSED NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.

DYNAMITE WAS TOSSED AT A BACK DOOR OF THE JOHN F. KENNEDY CULTURAL CENTRE NEAR BEIRUT'S FASHIONABLE HAMRA SHOPPING STREET. IT STARTED A SMALL FIRE AND SHATTERED WINDOWS BUT THERE WERE NO CASUALTIES IN EITHER INCIDENT.

OBSERVERS SAID THE BLASTS REPRESENTED A NEW CHALLENGE TO LAW AND ORDER IN LEBANON. THEY FOLLOWED NEARLY A WEEK OF CLASHES BETWEEN COMMANDOS AND RIGHT-WING LEBANESE GROUPS IN WHICH ABOUT THIRTY PEOPLE WERE KILLED.
