  • Description

The Kurdish people of northern Iraq have asked the United Nations to intervene in their struggle against Iraq.

A delegation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, led by Mr. Chalak Jewanroyee, went to the United Nations building in New York on Tuesday (25 March) to put his people's case.

It was the fourth appeal by the Kurds to the United Nations in twelve months and followed the signing or a treaty between Iraq and Iran.

Iran had been supplying the Kurds with arms and support but this stopped with the signing of the agreement.

Now the Iraqis say all fighting must stope by the first of April.

The Kurds fear that after this date the Iraqi army will destroy them.

The Kurds have been fighting for thirteen years for greater autonomy for their two million people, and more than 150,000 of them have fled to Iran since the signing of the treaty.
