Background: In an exhibition soccer match played in Paris on Tuesday (16 May), the Belgian team Bruges and the Iranian national team failed to decide a winner. The final score was one-all.

The Bruges team, runners-up in the recent European Cup, played right to left in the first half. The friendly exhibition match was organised by St. Germain, a Paris soccer club.

Iranian demonstrators, holding placards denouncing the Shah's government, took the opportunity of making a political point. The Iranian forwards attacked the Bruges defence and made an unsuccessful shot at goal.

The two sides were evenly matched. As Bruges pressed their attack, the ball was floated across the play and headed over the bar and out of danger.

The Iranian demonstrators was short-lived. They were led away by French police.

Eventually, Iran broke through. The Iranian forwards beat an offside trap by the Bruges defenders and scored the first goal of the match.

Then it was Bruges' turn. Slowly building up their attack, Bruges pushed the ball to their winger who beat back and put the ball into the penalty area. A Bruges forward mad a diving header to score the equaliser. It was the second, and last, goal of the match. Bruges and Iran were due to play again on Thursday (18 May).
