  • Description

IN THE FIRST DAYS OF TESTING THE NEW CIVIL RIGHTS LAW IN THE UNITED STATES, NEGROES HAVE REPORTED FEW MAJOR INCIDENTS. ONE WAS AT A RESTAURANT IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ON FRIDAY.

THE RESTAURANT OWNER, LESTER MADDOX, BRANDISHING A PISTOL AND AN AXE HANDLE, LED AN ANGRY CROWD OF WHITES IN CHASING AWAY THREE NEGROES FROM HIS PREMISES. EARLIER, MADDOX HAD SAID HE WOULD RATHER GO TO JAIL THAN SERVE NEGRO CUSTOMERS.

WHEN THE THREE NEGROS DROVE UP TO THE RESTAURANT PARKING LOT, MADDOX PULLED OUT A PISTOL, YELLING "GET OFF MY PROPERTY."
HE WAS SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 20 OTHER SEGREGATIONISTS, INCLUDING WOMEN WHO PICKED UP AXE HANDLES FROM A BOX IN FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT AND ADVANCED ON THE NEGROES' CAR. THE CAR THEN DROVE OFF, WITH THE NEGROES STRESSING THEY WOULD RETURN.

AT A RALLY IN THE CITY THAT DAY, GOVERNOR BEORGE WALLACE TOLD A CROWD THAT THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT WAS A "FRAUD, A SHAM, AND A HOAX."
