• Short Summary

THE HEAD OF GREECE'S PATRON SAINT, ST. ANDREW, RETURNED TO PATRAS IN SOUTHERN GREECE YESTERDAY?

  • Description

THE HEAD OF GREECE'S PATRON SAINT, ST. ANDREW, RETURNED TO PATRAS IN SOUTHERN GREECE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AFTER AN ABSENCE OF FIVE HUNDRED AND TWO YEARS. IT WAS TAKEN TO ROME FOR SAFE KEEPING IN 1462 AND HAS REMAINED THERE EVER SINCE.

THE HEAD, STILL ENCLOSED IN ITS ORIGINAL FINELY-WROUGHT GOLDEN RELIQUARY, FLEW FROM ROME IN A SPECIAL PLANE TO ARAXOS - AN AIRPORT ABOUT 18 1/2 MILES (30KM) FROM PATRAS. POPE PAUL'S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE, CARDINAL AUGUSTIN BEA, FLEW IN THE PLANE WITH THE RELIC. HE AND OTHER VATICAN OFFICIALS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BISHOP OF PATRAS AND BY THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF GREECE, MONSEIGNEUR BENEDICTOS PRINTESIS.

AT THE AIRPORT WHEN THE PLANE LANDED WAS BISHOP CONSTANTINOS, THE METROPOLITAN OF PATRAS.

THE HEAD WAS CARRIED FROM ARAXOS TO PATRAS IN A LONG PROCESSION WHICH STOPPED FREQUENTLY AT VILLAGES ALONG THE ROUTE TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO VENERATE THE APOSTLE SAINT'S REMAINS.

AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY ACCOMPANIED THE ARRIVAL OF THE HEAD IN THE CITY. SEVEN METROPOLITANS REPRESENTING THE GREEK PRIMATE, ARCHBISHOP CHRYSOSTOMOS, AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC DIGNITARIES TOOK THEIR PLACES ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SPECIAL BYZANTINE-STYLE PLATFORM IN THE CENTRE OF THE SQUARE. BETWEEN THEM WAS PLACED THE RELIQUARY. HANDING IT OVER TO BISHOP CONSTANTINOS, CARDINAL BEA SAID ITS RETURN GAVE POPE PAUL THE OPPORTUNITY TO PAY HIS RESPECTS TO THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF GREECE AND TO OPEN HIS HEART IN BROTHERHOOD AND LOVE WITHIN CHRIST.

LATER IN THE EVENING A SOLEMN CEREMONY WAS HELD IN THE BASILICA OF ST. ANDREW'S. THERE, CROWN PRINCESS IRENE AND PRIME MINISTER GEORGE PAPANDREOU WERE AMONG THE DIGNITARIES WHO KNELT BEFORE THE SACRED RELIC. THE HEAD HAS BEEN PLACED ON A SPECIAL CARVED GILDED TABLE IN THE BASILICA WHERE IT WILL REMAIN FOR FORTY DAYS FOR PUBLIC DEVOTION.

DURING THE SERVICE IN THE CATHEDRAL, ONE OF THE VATICAN REPRESENTATIVES READ OUT A MESSAGE FROM THE POPE WHICH CONCLUDED WITH A PRAYER THAT "THIS PRICELESS RELIC MAY BE A SYMBOL AND AN INCENTIVE FOR A UNITY OF FAITH IN CHRIST, DEVOTION AND MUTUAL LOVE."
