    The Army Commander, General Iskandar Ghanem, led proceedings at the monument.

    Families of military personnel who lost their lives while serving with Lebanon's armed forces attended the ceremony along with military attaches from foreign countries.

    Commander of the Beirut Military Region, Brigadier Aziz Ahdab, later delivered a speech in which he underlined the significance of what he described as martyrdom in defence of the country.

    In an associated ceremony on Thursday (1 August), Lebanese President Sulaiman Franjich attended a celebration to mark the graduation of military officers.

    The function took place at the Army camp at Fayadieh, near Beirut.

    About 60 Army officers graduated in the ceremony to mark Lebanese army Day.

    President Franjieh presented a ceremonial sword to the graduates before troops from the camp paraded before him.
