    A WEEKEND OF CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEFEAT OF THE NAZI GERMANY BEGAN TONIGHT (FRIDAY) IN PARIS WITH A TORCHLIGHT CEREMONY ON THE ESPLANADE DES INVALIDES.

    THREE PROCESSIONS TOOK PART IN THE CEREMONY, TO HONOUR THE VICTIMS OF THE WAR. AT THE HEAD OF EACH PROCESSION WERE CARRIED TORCHES LIT AT OTHER PARTS OF THE CITY WHERE THERE ARE WAR MEMORIALS, INCLUDING THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR AT THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE.

    TROOPS, FORMER SOLDIERS, AND RESISTANCE WORKERS FORMED THE BULK OF THE PROCESSIONS WHICH PASSED THROUGH STREETS LINED WITH CROWDS. WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT THE ESPLANADE, THE DOME OF L'INVALIDES WAS FLOODLIT. THEN THE TORCHES WERE USED TO KINDLE A SYMBOLIC FLAME.

    A COMMEMORATION SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY PRIESTS REPRESENTING THE ROMAN CATHOLIC, PROTESTANT, JEWISH AND MOSLEM FAITHS.

    TOMORROW (SATURDAY) 3,000 SOLDIERS WILL TAKE PART IN A PARADE TO BE REVIEWED BY PRESIDENT DE GAULLE. IN THE EVENING THERE WILL BE A FIREWORKS DISPLAY OVER THE TROCADERO GARDENS.
