  • Description

European long distance cycle road racing has started again, even though the winter is far from being over. Today (Monday) some 80 top international riders took part in the first stage of the Paris - Nice Race: a nine-stage event covering 1,525 kilometres (about 950 miles).

This first stage from Fontainebleau to Auxerre was won by a Belgian rider - Edouard Sels. He covered the 153 Kilometres (about 95 miles) in 3 hours, 58 minutes, 55 seconds.

In second place was Janssen from Holland, with Van Onninsgloo from Belgium third. The next three places were filled by Frenchmen. All were credited with the same time as the winner, who just scraped home in a tightly fought sprint finish. The race ends in Nice on 17th March.
