  • Description

United States deputy Chief of Staff, General Decker, took the salute when 3,500 American troops paraded on the Tempelhof Airfield, West Berlin, May 22, America's Armed Forces Day. The parade's slogan was "Power for Peace".

Eighty thousand Berliners- and a delegation including Russia's Military Commander in East Berlin - saw some of America's finest infantry and artillery units, and an armoured company equipped with M-48 Patton tanks.

Helicopters rounded off the display, and General Decker promised Western forces would carry out their "dedicated mission" of defending the ideals of the free world in Berlin.
