  • Description

A group of African nationalists left Rhodesia for Zambia on Wednesday (2 July) for talks with President kenneth Kaunda on a proposed constitutional conference with the Rhodesian Government.

The Secretary-General of the African National Council (ANC), Dr. Edson Sithole, failed to make the trip. He was recovering in hospital in Salisbury, allegedly from poison in his tea. President Kaunda made the claim on Wednesday at a dinner for the delegates, who were led by ANC president Bishop Abel Muzorewa and leading nationalist Joshua Nkomo.

The talks -- beginning on Thursday (3 July) -- were believed to have been initiated by British Deputy Foreign Secretary, Mr. David Ennals, and expected to centre on the disagreement among the three main factions, and a venue for the conference.

There have been reports that President Kaunda, who sponsored their visit, amy wish to arbitrate in the factional differences. It has been speculated -- but without confirmation -- that the talks would also be attended by president Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, President Samora Machel of Mozambique and President Sir Seretse Khama of Botswana.

The ANC officials -- some of whom have no passports -- were given special permission by the Rhodesian Government to attend the talks in the hope that they would agree to attend a full constitutional conference within Rhodesia.

There is a deadlock in staging the proposed constitutional conference because the African nationalists have insisted that it should be held outside Rhodesia.
