Background: Austria made sure of reaching next year's World Cup soccer finals in Argentina when they beat Turkey 1-0 in a European qualifying match in Izmir on Sunday (30 October). Austria's success means that strongly fancied East Germany, the Olympic Champions, will not be making the trip to South America, despite beating Malta 9-0 the previous day.
SYNOPSIS: Turkey, playing in the red shirts, had taken only three points from their three previous games, and this was one they had to win to have any chance of reaching Argentina. The Austrians started strong favourites, but in the early stages it was Turkey, who came nearest to scoring when Cemil slammed in a shot, which Koncillia did well punch over. After the interval, however, a lot of the Turks' move broke down in midfield.
In the second half Austria gradually began to find their rhythm, and attacked down the wings. After a neat build-up this move broke down, but the Austrians realised that using the flanks was their best chance of breaking the deadlock. The Turks defended stubbornly though, and this quick bread and long ball into the middle, almost brought a goal. It was a fine header, but the goalkeeper somehow managed to keep it out.
It was a narrow escape for Austria, but they hit back strongly, and in the 72nd minute Prohaska scored the all important goal. The ball was taken down the left, the low cross evaded the Turkish defence, and Prohaska made to mistake with a right foot shot from close range. It was a fine goal and Austria were on their way to Argentina.
With time running out the turks tried desperately to get back into the match, but the Austrians were in no mood to concede their advantage. This long shot was charged down, and the Austrians broke away again trying to put the issue beyond doubt. No more goals came, but austria were through.
Victory put them at the top of Group three and into the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958.
