  • Description

The eldest daughter of Egypt's President Sadat was married in. Cairo on Thursday (24 January). Lubna, who is 21, married 25-year-old Abdul Khalek Tharwat Abdul Ghaffar at the President's home.

Abdul Khalek is an official with the state-owned Bank Misr. He comes from a wealthy and aristocratic family; his grandfather, Ahmed Abdul Ghaffar, was a Minister under King Farouk.

Lubna was previously engaged to Ahmed Al-Misiri, a former army officer, now consul in Brussels.

Although a major social event in Cairo's calendar, the wedding was virtually unreported in the Egyptian press -- only one photograph and a short paragraph was published.

But, despite the lack of publicity, it was a lavish affair. Some 1,500 guests began celebrating at seven o'clock in the evening -- not finishing until five the following morning. Guests included government figures and included ex-King Idris of Libya, who now lives in Cairo. The wedding banquet included some 200 dishes.

During the festivities, the engagement was announced of Lubna's younger sister, Oha to Hassan Marie -- a student in the United States, who returned to Cairo for the ceremony.

The ceremonies, which included belly dancers, were also attended by veterans of the October war with Israel, many of them wounded.
