  • Description

Invited by the Hellenio community of Cairo, Archbishop Makarios arrived at Cairo airport today. Aly Rachid, the first Chamberlain of the Egyptian Government, met the head of the Cypriot Church as representative of Col. Nasser, President of the United Arab Republic.

His Excellency the Greek Ambassador, members of his staff, Gen. Abdel Fattah Bendari, the Cairo Governor, and Greek clergy, together with several hundred Greek youths, turned out to welcome Makarios. The young people were shouting and yelling, "Freedom for Cyprus".

The Archbishop, who is leader of the Cypriot movement for self-determination and who is believed to be in close contact with the ECKA terrorists, was invited to attend the Lambeth Conference--- a meeting of clergy from all denominations from all over the world at the residence of the prelate of the Church of England --- by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This invitation has started much discussion in Britain concerning the merits and advisability of allowing Makarios into the country on what might be termed, an unofficial visit.

In view of his support for the terrorists in Cyprus, many British people feel that he is as much to blame for the deaths of British Servicemen in Cyprus and should be arrested as a murderer or an accomplice. A former British Army officer and artist, Mr. Iver Worth, recently failed in his application for a warrant for Makarios' arrest. His evidence of the Archbishop's complicity in the murder of a British customs official and his wife, in 1956, was based on a Government White Paper.
