Background: More than fifty thousand chanting Nicaraguans marched through the streets of the country's capital, Managua, on Friday (3 August) in a show of support for the country's new Sandinist leaders. It was the fist such demonstration since the Junta took over power just over two weeks ago.

SYNOPSIS: Crowds of chanting, banner-waving Nicaraguans marched through some of the worst hit area of Managua on Friday in a rally organised by the military. The demonstration was officially intended to ho??? the Sandinist Rebels who died in the long fight to oust Former President Anastasio Somoza. "These streets are paved with glory" said Carlos Nunez Tejas, a leader of the Sandinist Liberation Front, as the march paused in the Ducuali section of eastern Managua. "We are here with our people, our army, our masses to commemorate those who died in combat" he said.

But some observers believe the demonstration was intended as a show of support to discourage counter-revolutionary forces. Chants of "Death to the counter-revolution. Long live the Sandinists" were a sharp reminder that the struggle may not be finally over. Only a few days ago (31 July) snipers attacked a Sandinist guard post in Managua.

Meanwhile the economic fight in Nicaragua is only just beginning. The five-member Junta of the Government of National Reconstruction has estimated that more than two and a half billion dollars will be needed over the ??? five to eight years to rebuild the country's devastated economy.
