  • Description

THE WALL THAT DIVIDES BERLIN...TODAY (MONDAY) MORE THAN 100,000 WEST BERLINERS ATTENDED A RALLY TO COMMEMORATE THE ABORTIVE EAST GERMAN WORKERS UPRISING 10 YEARS AGO AND TO PAY TRIBUTE AT PARTS OF THE WALL THAT HAVE BECOME MEMORIALS TO EAST GERMANS WHO DIED TRYING TO REACH WEST BERLIN.

WREATHS WERE PLACED AGAINST THE WALL BY THE FEDERAL VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR LUDWIG ERHARD AND THE GOVERNING MAYOR OF WEST BERLIN, HERR WILLY BRANDT.

VICE-CHANCELLOR ERHARD, NOMINATED TO SUCCEED CHANCELLOR ADENAUER LATER THIS YEAR, TOLD THE RALLY: "THE MASTERS IN THE KREMLIN SHOULD GIVE TO THE WORLD AN EXAMPLE OF POLITICAL FORESIGHT BY GIVING MORE FREEDOM TO EAST GERMANY."
SOME 200 SPECIAL MEETINGS WERE HELD ALL OVER WEST GERMANY TODAY TO COMMEMORATE THE UPRISING.

(ACCORDING TO FIGURES ISSUED BY THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, 25 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND ABOUT 400 WOUNDED WHEN SOVIET TROOPS AND TANKS PUT DOWN THE RISING IN EAST BERLIN AND OTHER TOWNS IN EAST GERMANY.WESTERN SOURCES HOWEVER, BELIEVE THESE FIGURES ARE TOO LOW.THE RISING WAS STARTED BY A STRIKE OF WORKERS PROTESTING AGAINST AN INCREASE IN PRODUCTION NORMS - IT DEVELOPED INTO A WIDESPREAD DEMAND FOR FREE ELECTIONS.
