  • Description

Fourteen people wee killed and four others seriously injured when a Khmer Republic Government C123 Transport aircraft was shot down just north of the isolated provincial capital of Svay Rieng, Southeast of Phnom Penh on Friday (11 October). The aircraft was taking civilians, including four children, and military personnel to Svay Rieng, situated in the "Parrot's Beak" area which juts into South Vietnam.

The Cambodian Military Command reported that the aircraft had been hit by a hear-seeking missile, causing the five tons of ammunition also aboard to explode. Wreckage was scattered over a wide area.

The injured, including the aircraft's pilot and co-pilot, were flown to hospital in Phnom Penh. Two crew members were reported still missing.

The hear-seeking missile was of a type new to the known weaponry of the Communist-led insurgents (khmer Rouge), and increased concern among Cambodian military leaders about the continued fighting in the "Parrot's Beak" area.
