  • Description

The Apollo 13 astronauts who had to abandon their Moon landing last March after an explosion on their space ship were honoured at a special lunch in New York City on Wednesday (3 June).

New York's Mayor John Lindsay was host and met the trio James Lovell Jack Swigert and Fred Haise and their wives when they arrived at the Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Centre where the luncheon was held.

Only last week a review board set up to investigate what happened aboard Apollo 13 published its findings. A special "detanking" procedure before the launch probably resulted in major damage to the wiring insulation in the tank.

The tank contained liquid oxygen and exploded while Apollo 13 was 205,000 miles from earth. The astronauts had to take refuge in the lunar landing module prior to entering the command module for the splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
