  • Description

The last full session ??? the organisation of African Unity conference in Uganda ended ??? Thursday (31 July) with the failure of the powerful Arab representation to pass a resolution calling for Israel's expulsion from the United Nations.

Two resolution -- one from ??? and the other from the Middle East bloc --calling for Israel's expulsion were put to the O.A.U. summit.

But even after 11 hours of sometimes heated debate, the best the Arabs could do was to persuade the 46-member summit to "take the most adequate measures in order to reinforce the pressure exerted on Israel at the United Nations, including the possibility of eventually depriving it of its membership".

Even then five countries formally tables reservations over the resolution.

The move for outright expulsion was headed by the Libyan Leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. Egypt only asked for suspension.

Another touchy subject -- the establishment of an office of the O.A.U. liberation committee to help liberation movements trying to win independence of the territory of Afars and Issas form france -- was referred for further discussion.

Ethiopia and Somalia both asked that the office be established in their countries.

The conference decided to send a commission to Angola immediately to mediate between the three feuding liberation movements. Angolan UNITA leader, Dr. Jonas Savimbi was the only leader of the three groups to attend the summit.
