  • Description

IN JERUSALEM, THE FRONTIER DIVIDING ISRAEL FROM JORDAN OPENED TODAY (THURSDAY) TO ALLOW PILGRIMS TO ATTEND THE CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS IN BETHLEHEM. A RECORD 6,000 PILGRIMS PASSED THROUGH THE CUSTOMS. THIS YEAR THEY ARE ALLOWED TO STAY FOUR DAYS INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 36 HOURS.

MORE THAN 3,000 CHRISTIAN PILGRIMS FROM ABROAD WERE SPENDING THIS CHRISTMAS IN ISRAEL, JOINING LOCAL CHRISTIANS AT SERVICES AND MIDNIGHT MASSES BEING HELD IN CHURCHES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

TONIGHT IN BETHLEHEM, A SERVICE WAS HELD IN THE GROTTO WHERE JOSEPH AND MARY ARE SAID TO HAVE WAITED FOR THE BIRTH OF JESUS. AND ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY, A SERVICE IN MANY LANGUAGES WAS HELD AT THE SPOT WHERE, ACCORDING TO TRADITION, THE ANGEL APPEARED TO THE SHEPHERDS AND TOLD THEM OF CHRIST'S BIRTH.

A SUPPER OF FLAT LOAVES, LAMB AND OLIVES - THE CUSTOMARY MEAL OF THE SHEPHERD - WAS EATEN AFTERWARDS.
