SYNOPSIS: About 20,000 demonstrators took part in a noisy mass march on the northern outskirts of Brussels on Sunday. They were demanding fair treatment for Flemish speakers in the Brussels area. During the march, demonstrators broke several shop windows. Some Belgian flags were pulled down and dragged through the streets of Vilvorde. Traffic was halted in the Vilvorde area as the demonstrators marched through the town.

The mass march was organised by the Vlaamse Volksbeweging - The Flemish Popular Movement. They were demanding, among other things, the decentralisation of their country. They want Belgium divided into regions. The demonstrators demands also included respect for the Flemish inhabitants of Brussels and protection from what they called the Frenchification of the Brabant Province which surrounds the Belgian capital. A counter demonstration called by an extremist French speaking organisation fizzled out because of lack of support - only about 150 people turned up.
