  • Description

Argentina's police force buried its dead in Buenos Aires on Saturday (3 July) following a guerrilla attack the previous day on a heavily-guarded police canteen in which 18 people were killed and more than 60 wounded.

SYNOPSIS: The scene of the bomb blast -- the Federal Police Security Department near the centre of the capital. A powerful shrapnel bomb exploded in the dining room at lunchtime, killing 14 policemen, two policewomen, a waitress, and a woman visitor.

The police victims were buried the next day with full military honours, while other police attempted to solve the mystery of how such an attack could be carried out on one of the most heavily-secured buildings in the city. Among the mourners was Federal Police Chief Arturo Corbeta, appointed only two weeks earlier after his predecessor was killed by a bomb. A guerrilla group calling itself the Peronist Montoneros has claimed responsibility for both the police chief's death and Friday's police massacre. President Jorge Videla and Brigadier Orlando Agosti, a senior member of the ruling establishment, also represented the military junta which the guerrillas are trying to overthrow -- claiming to be the true followers of former President Juan Peron who died two years ago. Meanwhile, as the funeral procession drew toward the city's Chacarita Cemetery, police found another 18 bullet-ridden bodies throughout Buenos Aires. The bodies included those of five young men and three women found in a car park and five priests shot dead in their church. This brought the death toll in political violence in Argentina to more than 600 this year.

Meanwhile, police were working on the theory that a guerrilla sympathiser smuggled about 17 pounds (eight kilos) of plastic explosives into the police building to cause Friday's deaths.
