    MOUNT AGUNG -- MYTHICAL HOME OF THE HINDU-BALINESE GODS -- WAS STILL BELCHING BLACK SMOKE AS THE LARGE CROWD AT THE TEMPLE WENT ABOUT UNCONCERNED, PREPARING COLOURFUL LANTERNS AND SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS.THE FESTIVAL, KNOWN AS "EKA DASA RUDRA", IS MEANT TO APPEASE THE GODS, BUT HAS NOT BEEN HELD FOR 200 YEARS.DANCERS SAID TO BE POSSESSED BY SPIRITS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE RITUALS.

    (ELSEWHERE ON BALI, CIVIC AND MILITARY AUTHORITIES ARE HARD AT WORK RESETTLING QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE EVACUATED TO SAFETY.THE SOUTH-EAST REGION HAS BEEN SO BADLY DEVASTATED BY VOLCANIC LAVA AND ASH THAT IT WILL BE AT LEAST TEN YEARS BEFORE CROPS CAN GROW AGAIN).
