Senior Indonesian Government officials, including President Suharto, were at Jakarta airport to met the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Mr. Michael Somare. Mr. Somare and a fifteen member Government delegation are on a six day official visit to Indonesia.
After being met at the airport, Mr. Somare was accompanied by President Suharto to the Presidential Palace where the two leaders held extensive discussions.
Although no details of the talks were officially revealed, Reuters News Agency reported that the discussions included the question of rebels who have fled the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya and crossed the border into Papua New Guinea.
Mr. Somare also had talks with the Indonesian Finance Minister, Dr. Irfejo Nitisastro, on the subject of strengthening trade and economic relations between the two countries.
After the talks President Suharto told newsmen that both Indonesia and Papua New Guinea must continuously promote what he called, "the mutual trust and understanding that exists between our two nations."
